Custom Sport Mouthguards

The material and fit of your mouthguard is important for successful prevention of sports injury.

The material a dental mouthguard is made of is critical to how successful it is at preventing a sport injury. At Leichhardt St Dental we make Professional Dental Mouthguards that are vacuum formed or pressure laminated. This process means your dental and sport mouthguard will be a far superior fit. The mouthguard is made from Profrom and Briteguard material. This material is superior to many of the other generic materials on the market. These well respected materials have greater absorbency of the impact and will therefore prevent or decrease the severity of impacts. Unfortunately many mouthguards of poor quality material offer very little if any protection and can be compared to almost not wearing a dental mouthguard at all.

There are Three Levels of Mouthguards:

1. Standard Mouthguard – low to medium impact, designed for kids with baby teeth or both adult and baby teeth that are rapidly changing, a thick one layer mouthguard.

2. Club Mouthguard – medium to high impact, designed for children and adults in heavy contact sports such as club rugby and school hockey.

3. Triple layer Mouthguard and Boxing Mouthguard– designed for professional contact sports. For this type of mouthguard we use the lab that makes mouthguards for the Broncos and Queensland Rugby. For boxing an acrylic insert is used inside the mouthguard over the front teeth for heavy boxing impacts.

Why Do you Need a Mouthguard?

A mouthguard helps absorb the shock experienced by a blow to the face, which might otherwise result in an injury to the mouth or jaw. If the impact to your teeth is severe enough, a mouthguard may not totally prevent an injury, but it will certainly minimise the extent of the injury, which can mean the difference between a simple repair or losing a tooth.

What is a Custom-Fitted Mouthguard?

There are many types of mouthguards, from over the counter products to the professionally-fitted custom made mouthguard. The Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommends that self-fitted, over-the-counter mouthguards are inadequate and, for effective protection, a professionally-fitted custom mouthguard is essential.

A custom-fitted mouthguard is made using an impression taken of your teeth. This will provide the best fit, size, coverage and thickness in a mouthguard custom designed to fit your teeth accurately. The mouthguards are made using vacuum forming and pressure laminating. The thickness varies according to the sport you play and the degree of impact.

We should review your mouthguard at our Brisbane Dentist in Spring Hill every 12 months to ensure it fits correctly. If baby teeth are lost and replaced with adult teeth, it is advised to remake the mouthguard after 12months, to ensure it continues to fit accurately.
